I’m a poet, a past English teacher, and currently a high school librarian who still gets to hold poetry workshops in my school. The Common Core will depend on the intelligence of teachers. I have faith in that. I do not have faith in the testing industry that is about “measuring” progress. One of the greatest lessons in the folly of measuring came from King Lear. Poetry’s gift to the reader is a kind of emotional intelligence and that, my friends, cannot be measured.

I was thrilled to hear about this book’s receiving such an esteemed award. I’ve loved it since I first laid eyes on it. I had the pleasure of meeting Melissa Manlove at a conference; thrilled for her as well, and for Meilo So, whose illustrations are exquisite. Thank you both for such an enlightening interview.
